Ocean

This is the Pacific Ocean side of San Francisco and the views from the Coast Highway are spectacular.  Both of these hotels are near the Presidio, the fabulous Palace of the Legion of Honor Art Museum with its amazing Rodin collection, the historic Cliff House and remains of the turn of the century Sutro Baths.  It's also near the Ocean end of the Golden Gate Park and on several major MUNI (bus) lines.

The sunsets are amazing and the waves crashing on the rocks will take your breath away.  And you can almost always plan on getting some of the famous San Francisco fog in the morning and occasional afternoon.  You can't go wrong here.

Golden Gate / Fisherman's Wharf

These hotels are on the Bay side of San Francisco and are just down the street from the Presidio and the Golden Gate Bridge.  Also close by you'll find the famous Fisherman's Wharf, the Exploratorium, the Museum of Fine Arts and a ship to Alcatraz.  Plus, you're just across the Bridge from Sausalito and Tiburon.  And it's easy to catch a bus to other parts of San Francisco if you don't want to deal with traffic and parking.

Note that these hotels are mostly on Lombard Street - but it's not the famous twisty part you see in movies and in postcards.  This is huge with 3 lanes in each direction and is the main street in and out of San Francisco and leads directly to the Golden Gate Bridge.
